Logo design has always been an artistic struggle for me, so here is a bit of the behind the scenes look at what I put into this project that I left on the cutting room floor for this design, and a few possible alternate logo/brand designs. I hope that if you find yourself reading this, you will share it with your young artist as well.
Here are a few questions to help get the conversation going!
1. How many sketches do you think you should do if you want to make a masterpiece? How many times do you usually make a sketch before you start on a final piece? Is there such a thing as too much sketching?
2. Which one is your favorite from the gallery? What makes it the best? Why do you think Cook chose the one he did?
Challenge: Set a timer for 10 minutes. Draw your favorite thing to draw (beach, cat, dragon, face, sunset, apple, etc.) 10 different ways (different technique, different materials, different colors, different poses, different angle, different compositions, different styles) on one sheet of paper. See how different you can make each attempt. This page will likely never see the light of day, so don’t be sad if these drawings aren’t perfect. They are supposed to be fast, sketchy, undetailed ideas that you can choose from later.
This process is called “thumb-nailing” or “iterative drawings” which will be great vocabulary for our students to begin thinking about!
If you take on the challenge, I hope you will have the trust/courage to share a photo of your attempt with me!
